The Red Door School is one of Ireland’s first special schools where individual educational programs are provided under the science of Applied Behaviour Analysis. Founded by the Learning Centre for Autistic Children and starting in 2001 with just 4 students, the school has expanded and in 2009, moved to its current premises in Monkstown in 2009.
The Red Door is included with other so-called "Pilot" schools which are funded by the Department of Education. This funding doesn't cover all the costs incurred in running the school, but with fund-raising events run by parents throughout the year, The Red Door is able to provide the highest quality education to all its students.
The Learning Centre for Autistic Children's Mission Statement is as follows:
"Specialised educational and therapeutic services are vital for all persons with autism. Our vision is that by providing these services at our Learning Centre, our students will function more effectively and lead richer lives in an inclusive way in our community".
In July 2010, The Red Door School joined with 6 other schools in having Autism Ireland recognised as a new Patron Body by the Department of Education.
